This book is basically a shortened version of "A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language" (1985). But it is very much more. It has been adapted to the needs of students, with much reorientation and simplification of the material in the parent book. Moreover, it has made use of research by ourselves and others that has been published since the mid-1980s, and this is reflected not only in the text throughout but also in the bibliographical references.
