Genesis of the Proto-Indo-European Roots

Frankfurt Bingens Verlag 2016.The author maintains that PIE stems (roots) had not always been monosyllabic, that they had evolved from polysyllabic word-forms reduced to monosyllables under the impact of the dynamic word stress, helped along by sundry dissimilatory processes. Special attention is paid to reduplicated stems reduced in the course of time to monosyllables, the latter preserving until today noticeable traces of former complete double stems. Root-reduplications influenced the entire phonological system, providing favourable conditions for emergence of labiovelars and weakened velars (“laryngeals”).
