The Working and Management of an English Railway

NO apology is needed for the production of a new Edition of this work. In the five years which have elapsed since its original publication it has come to be recognised, both in this country and abroad, as a handbook, or standard authority, on the working and management of railways, and it is of the essence of such a work that it should be periodically revised and brought  so to speak  up to date. In the world of rail ways, events move quickly, and history is so rapidly made, that what is perfectly true as a statement of fact to-day may be no longer true to-morrow, to say nothing of the fact that statistics, which are freely scattered throughout this book, are of little value unless they deal with recent periods.
