Love, Marriage, and the Catholic Conscience: Understanding the Church’s Teachings on Birth Control was originally published in German in 1968 by Habbel, Regensburg, as Die Enzyklika “Humanae Vitae” — ein Zeichen des Wiederspruchs. In 1969, Franciscan Herald Press published an English translation by Damian Fedoryka and John Crosby entitled The Encyclical “Humanae Vitae”: A Sign of Contradiction. This 1998 edition by Sophia Institute Press, published with the permission of Alice von Hildebrand, uses Franciscan Herald Press’s 1969 translation, with minor editorial revisions, and includes the full text of the encyclical Humanae Vitae.
